Halloween is a festive time of year for kids to dress up, stuff their faces with candy, and enjoy time spent with friends and family. And although Halloween is a fun time of the year for kids everywhere, it’s basically our worst nightmare at Morris County Dental Associates. Not only are kids indulging in more candy than usual but most of them forget to brush their teeth before bed which means that the sugar has a longer amount of time to settle into the teeth and cause dental decay and problems. In order to ensure that you child’s teeth are in working order— especially after Halloween— bring them into Morris County Dental Associates for their bi-annual cleaning. If, however, you have a hard time getting your child to do much of anything, especially visiting the dentist, try these three tips and tricks.
Hide the Candy
As a good rule of thumb, it’s important to let your kids know that they should brush their teeth after they eat a piece of candy— even if it’s just one. If you can’t seem to get your little one to come into Morris County Dental Associates, consider hiding the candy altogether and let them know that once they see the dentist and get their teeth cleaned, they will be able to enjoy a piece or two of candy everyday once again.
Now, we aren’t suggesting sitting your child in front of terrifying images of people who have spiders crawling out of their teeth, but by simply showing your child an image of what a cavity— or a hole in their tooth— looks like, you can help them better understand the importance of getting their teeth cleaned. Additionally, make sure to show them what it looks like to have your teeth cleaned from the inside of the mouth. Once they see how much tartar and plaque is scraped away, they might be more inclined to visit us.
As a parent, it’s easier to simply answer your children’s questions with a “Because I said so” or “Well, those are the rules.” However, in order to help your child gain a better understanding of the importance of good dental care, answer their questions in the best way possible. If you don’t know the answers to their questions, feel free to contact Morris County Dental Associates.
If you are worried that your child’s teeth are rotting away after Halloween, use the three tips above in order to convince them to come see us at Morris County Dental Associates. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, contact our office today!
