What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small titanium cylinders that are placed into the jawbone to replace the roots of missing teeth. They have two primary uses: to replace missing teeth (either single or multiple) or to help hold dentures in place. While dental implants are typically made from titanium, they are also being made out of zirconia.

One of the most confusing issues to consumers are the components of dental implants. Quite often a dental team and patient will refer to a full tooth replacement as an “implant.” Technically, this is not correct. The full tooth replacement is comprised of three parts: the implant, the abutment, and the crown. The implant is also known as a fixture or body. This is the “screw” or “rod” that is placed into the jawbone. The “crown” or “cap” is the actual tooth you see in your mouth. There is a hidden component, called an abutment, which is a connector between the implant and crown.

After the procedure, the jawbone grows around the posts, so that they become permanently anchored in place. In some cases, dental implants can be placed on the same day as a tooth extraction, while for others, periodontal treatment and other procedures are required before implantation. It’s important to speak to your dental implant dentist to develop a treatment plan that’s right for you and may include any necessary pre-treatments.

Dr. Ira Goldberg, owner of Morris County Dental Associates in Succasunna, is a leader in implant dentistry. Not only does he treat patients locally from towns such as Randolph, Denville, Mendham, Long Valley, and Mt. Olive, but patients travel from other locations such as Florida, New York, North Carolina and other states.

Almost every dentist claims to provide dental implants, and we realize you have a myriad of offices to choose from. What separates Dr. Ira Goldberg and Morris County Dental Associates from others? Here’s a sampling:

  • All implant treatment is performed “in-house.” Rarely does a patient have to go to
another office or see other doctors to complete their implant care.
  • Dr. Goldberg is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology / Implant
Dentistry. Only a few hundred dentists in the world hold this achievement. In addition
to this award, he has earned other accolades such as being a Fellow or Diplomat in other
    implant organizations.
  • Dr. Goldberg treats other dentists and their families. He also receives referrals from
other general dentists to treat their patients with dental implants. His colleagues and
the community thinks so highly of Dr. Goldberg’s skill that he has received multiple
awards multiple times, such as “America’s Top Dentists” and “NJ Top Dentists.”
  • Because Dr. Goldberg performs so many implant and implant related procedures, he has
invested heavily in staff, staff training, and technology to make procedures faster, safer,
    and more streamlined.
  • We can say as many things as we’d like about Dr. Goldberg. But the “proof is in the
pudding,” and may we suggest you investigate independent reviews, such as on Google
and Healthgrades? We’re sure you’ll be pleased!

Tooth Implants can help replace:

  • a single tooth
  • multiple teeth
  • a full jaw of teeth
  • or help stabilize dentures

A dentist with advanced training in dental implants, like Dr. Goldberg, can determine which type is right for you.

How Much Do Dental Implants Cost?

Dr. Goldberg always tries to answer a direct question with a direct answer.  That’s why we will tell you the placement of a single dental implant costs between $900 and $1,950.  It is critical to note that this is just for the implant, not for the implant, abutment, and crown/bridge/denture.

There are many variables involved when determining the fee for an implant and its restoration: Are you in need of a standard implant or a mini-implant?  How many implants do you need?  What is going on top of that implant: a crown, denture, or bridge?  Do you require other procedures such as extractions or bone grafting?

As you can see, there are multiple variables that go along with the simple question of “how much does a dental implant cost.”  This is why we offer and recommend a free consultation to discuss your particular situation.

When you are comparing costs or receiving consultations, be sure both you and the person you’re having a conversation with are talking about the same thing. If you ask, “how much does an implant cost,” you may then receive an answer to just that: the implant. Not the implant, abutment, and crown.

Procedure Risks

Titanium is a biocompatible material, meaning the body accepts it. There are no reports of allergic reaction to the titanium alloys used for dental implants. Success rates are generally between 92% and 99%, depending upon the type of implant used, its location in the mouth, a person’s health, and the job it is being asked to perform. Primary reasons why they may fail include uncontrolled medical conditions and failure of patients to return to the dental office for maintenance. Although it is rare, there may be no detectable reason for implant “failure.”

Choosing a Highly Qualified Dentist

While there are many things that you should consider when looking for an implant dentist, basing your decision on experience, training, and technology will help you to find the best provider for your needs. Dr. Goldberg has 20 years of experience in placing and restoring implants, and he holds numerous credentials in the field, including a diploma from the American Board of Oral Implantology. At our office, we utilize the latest in imaging technology, including 3-D scans and RFA (resonance frequency analysis) to develop treatment plans and place implants, ensuring the best results.

Implants & Dentures

Tooth implants can help you stabilize your dentures (whether full or partial dentures) or even completely eliminate them for you! Mini dental implants are becoming more popular for denture-stabilization procedures, so you have another less expensive option at your disposal. Some people are bothered by the covering of the roof of their mouth. Others don’t like the metal hooks and clasps.

Implants can control these issues, and more:

  • Bone loss. A denture puts pressure directly onto the jawbone, and the bone will melt away over years. This will eventually cause dentures to become looser, nerves can become exposed and hurt, and in extreme cases, jaws can break.
  • Increase chewing efficiency. A person cannot chew strongly or as effectively with dentures. Once implants stabilize the denture, both strength, and efficiency increase dramatically. This improves nutrition, health, and overall happiness & well-being.
  • Eliminate dentures altogether. Read the section below to see how you can get rid of a denture altogether!

Dental Implant Maintenance & Care

Every implant patient will have a different “Recare Protocol,” but in general, you need to present to the dental office 3 to 4 times per year within the first two years. You should expect to have the implant(s) and teeth or appliance physically checked, the occlusion (bite) checked, and radiographic exams (x-rays) taken. These services are NOT included in the quoted fees for the treatment: rather, this is part of your maintenance protocol. If you are problem-free after the first two years, annual exams (or semi-annual if you have any natural teeth in your mouth) with annual films should then be expected.

Just because you have implants does not mean that the fixtures or teeth do not have to be cleaned. You can still develop infections of the bone and gums. Brushing, flossing, rinses with mouthwashes (medicated or OTC), waterpiks, and denture cleansers may all be part of your customized home-care regimen. For additional information check out our Maintenence and Post Treatment Info Sheet.

Full Jaw Solutions

Sometimes, people suffer from “terminal dentition” (when all or most teeth cannot be saved), or they experience recurring pain, infections, and cavities. In these cases, removal of all of the teeth and replacement with implants may then be the fastest, healthiest, and most economical solution.

People oftentimes think that they have to place an implant for each tooth: this is not correct.  With just four to 6 implants per jaw, we can replace a full set of teeth. This can give you a new lease on life with a brand new smile and the elimination of pain!
