Dental Implants vs Dentures Succasunna NJ

At Morris County Dental Associates, our team provides several replacement options for missing teeth to restore your optimal oral health. The best treatment for you will depend on your personal oral health needs and cosmetic goals.

Dental Implants can complement dentures, or they can replace dentures.  It’s the best of both worlds!  What do we mean by this?

COMPLETE or FULL DENTURES

A complete or full denture is a denture that replaces all of the teeth in your upper or lower jaw.  If you have a full denture, you may already be familiar with some of the limitations or requirements:

  • Adhesives (glues) to keep the dentures in place
  • The roof of your mouth is covered by plastic
  • Denture sores or areas that hurt from the denture moving around
  • Limited chewing power
  • Continued bone loss
  • Decreased self-esteem or confidence

There is an implant solution known as an Overdenture.  2 to 4 implants are typically placed, and the results oftentimes are:

  • Elimination of adhesives
  • The roof of your mouth not being covered
  • Less-to-no movement of the denture
  • Increased chewing power
  • A decrease in the rate of bone loss
  • An increase in self-esteem or confidence

An overdenture is a regular denture that is fitted with snaps that click onto specialized attachments on the implants.  Just like a regular denture, the teeth come in and out of your mouth.  The difference is the retentive power that the snaps provide.

PARTIAL DENTURES

With partial dentures, a person still has some of their regular teeth.  The appliance, known as a partial denture, comes in and out but has clips that hug the remaining teeth for support.  If a person doesn’t have a lot of teeth left, the partial denture doesn’t stay in place very well, and can also damage the remaining teeth.

Dental implants can be placed into selected locations and outfitted with snaps just like with the Complete Denture.  The partial denture can connect to the snaps.  This helps the denture stay in place and reduces the stress placed on the remaining teeth.  It also provides additional advantages like the full denture: an increase in confidence & chewing ability, along with decreases in denture movement and bone loss.

ALL-ON-FOUR® / FULL MOUTH DENTAL IMPLANTS

For the person with no teeth or considering removing their remaining teeth, a set of 4 to 6 implants may eliminate dentures altogether.  Your final teeth are non-removable (as opposed to dentures).  Patient satisfaction levels with All On Four are extremely high.

What Are Hybrid Dentures?

Hybrid Teeth and Hybrid Dentures are artificial teeth supported on dental implants. They have really come into their own over the last number of years. They provide people with a new level of dental comfort and improve overall health, well-being, and happiness for a fraction of the cost previously available. They truly are a life-changer.

All-On-4, Teeth-In-A-Day, and Hybridge® are just a few brand names for Hybrid Dentures. More and more implant manufacturers, organizations, and dentists are coming up with their own names and slight variations to jump into this field. For example, BioHorizons has “Teeth Xpress” and Zimmer Dental has “RevitaliZe.”

Sometimes it’s not as important to worry about what brand name procedure is being performed, but rather who is performing it. Make sure that the surgeon and the restorative dentist have experience with these types of procedures and surgeries. Also, if the surgeon and restorative dentist are not the same people, it’s important to know that the team communicates well with each other. Dr. Goldberg performs both parts and has the experience: only rarely must he refer to another doctor.

Candidates for these procedures include:

  • People who live in constant dental pain from recurring infections
  • People who require so much dental care that the costs are exorbitant
  • People who are tired of the endless cycle of dental treatment that has to be redone over and over
  • People who have dentures that move and hurt, and want to eliminate them
  • People who understand jaw bone will continue to deteriorate and disappear as the years progress, and they want to decrease or eliminate this process

It is important to remember this type of care is an investment in your health. Dental insurance covers very little. You will not see the cost-effectiveness over the short-term: this is a long-term investment. The savings comes into play when you realize root canals, fillings, crowns, bridges, and dentures do not have to be redone and replaced.
