Before you build a house, you need to lay the foundation, which will ensure it stays steady and strong for decades to come. Your gums largely play the same role in your mouth, though they are often overlooked because most of the focus goes on the teeth. But did you know that gum disease is more common than cavities? Giving them a little bit of extra attention can go a long way in stopping oral health issues in the short and long term, and thankfully, it’s not that complicated.

Gums 101: Why Are They So Important?

The gums are unsung heroes of your smile. They protect the roots (which have thinner enamel than the top of your teeth and are quite sensitive) and underlying bone, plus they frame the teeth, making them important for your appearance.

Like your teeth, they can fall victim to plaque and bacteria, leading to an infection called gum disease. This starts as minor redness, swelling, and frequent bleeding, but can easily lead to loose teeth and even tooth loss if left untreated. There is also a growing body of research that shows when a person has gum disease, their risk for cardiovascular issues, diabetes complications, and even Alzheimer’s increases by two to three-fold!

So in short, looking after your gums goes well beyond making your dentist happy—it directly influences every aspect of your oral and overall health.

Now for the Good News

Thankfully, your gums don’t require a special routine or set of tools you’ve been neglecting for years to stay healthy. You’re probably already familiar with the best practices; it’s just a matter of making sure you don’t overlook your gums. The best way to safeguard them against disease is…

  • Brushing twice a day, making sure the bristles clean the area where your teeth and gums meet.
  • Flossing once in the evening and getting the string to the very end of the gum pockets (the small spaces between your teeth and gums). Food particles and quite a bit of bacteria can gather in these tiny areas, and flossing is the most direct way to remove them.
  • Rinsing with an alcohol-free mouthwash can cleanse those hard-to-reach areas beyond your brush and floss.
  • Seeing your dentist at least twice a year gives them a chance to examine your mouth for early signs of trouble, plus a professional cleaning can remove plaque and tartar from those trouble spots you can’t get on your own.

Happy Gums, Happy Life

Giving your gums a little bit of extra attention can go a long way, and unlike other health advice on the internet, you don’t need to get up extra early or add hours to your hygiene regimen each week. It’s all about doing what you’re (hopefully) already doing with just a little more awareness. By keeping this in mind, your smile (just like a well-built house) can be counted on to stand the test of time and be there to create lasting memories.
